How to update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1

 

The information in this document explains how to update your TOSHIBA PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

The update process consists of the following parts:

1) TOSHIBA PC models preinstalled with Windows 8 supported by TOSHIBA for update to Windows 8.1.
2) Things to do before updating to Windows 8.1.
3) Perform Windows 8.1 update from Windows Store on your computer.
4) Update Windows by using Windows Update.
5) Check Toshiba Service Station for updates & or obtain software from TOSHIBA web site
6) Check the Windows Store for updates.

Important items to consider before updating to Windows 8.1

• The time it will take to download the Windows 8.1 update to your computer may vary depending on the speed of your internet connection and the amount of traffic on your internet connection.
• Some third party hardware and software may not work properly after the update process.
• If you decide to return to Windows 8, you may need to recover or restore your computer to factory settings.
Please see Appendix A in this document to review the recovery options.

Part I: TOSHIBA PC models preinstalled with Windows 8 supported by TOSHIBA for update to Windows 8.1

• Supported models with Windows 8 preinstalled: ALL
• Unsupported models with Windows 8 preinstalled: NONE

Part II: Things to Do Before Updating to Windows 8.1

1) Make sure that the AC adaptor is connected during the whole updating process.
2) Make sure to keep Internet access available during the whole updating process.
3) Use the TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator utility to create recovery media (DVD or USB Flash Memory)
which will allow you to restore the factory preinstalled software. For help on creating recovery media
please see your online user’s manual.
4) Backup the files on your PC.
5) Update your TOSHIBA components and drivers by using TOSHIBA Service Station. To access the TOSHIBA Service Station:

a. On Start screen, type Service Station, and then click Service Station from the list that appears.
b. Accept TOSHIBA Service Station Utility Software Notice & Acceptance if required.
c. Click Check for Updates and install any updates that appear.

6) Update your antivirus software and other third party software installed to the latest version from the
manufactures’ Web sites.
7) Remember your Windows password. You may need to enter it after updating.

Important notice for users of Intel Wireless Display (WiDi): Please read before updating.

Intel® Wireless Display is no longer supported on Windows 8.1, but you may be able to connect to external display wirelessly via following way, if your computer supports Miracast™.

How to uninstall Intel Wireless Display:
1. Press the Windows logo key + X.
2. Select Programs and Features.
3. Find and select Intel Wireless Display, then select Uninstall.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall.

How to wirelessly connect an external display:
1. In the Settings charm, click Change PC settings.
2. Click PC and devices.
3. Click Devices.
4. Click Add a device under Add devices.
5. Select the Miracast receiver device from the Select a device box and follow the on-screen instructions to connect.

Part III: Perform Windows 8.1 update from Windows Store on your computer

Make sure your Windows 8 PC is up to date by installing the latest Windows updates

To check for updates in Windows Update

1) Open Windows Update in Control Panel by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search
(or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer
down, and then clicking Search), entering Windows Update in the search box, tapping or clicking
Settings, and then tapping or clicking Install updates.
2) In the left pane, tap or click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates
for your PC.
3) If updates are found, tap or click Install updates.
4) Check for and install any optional updates. See Appendix B for how to check for optional updates.

Open the Windows Store and select the “Update to Windows 8.1” tile, or if you see a notification to “Update to Windows 8.1” you can select the “Go to the Store” button

To update to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store


1) From the Windows 8.1 product page, select Download. The download and installation of Windows 8.1
may take 1-2 hours, but you can continue using your PC while downloading.
2) If asked to take any actions, follow the onscreen instructions.
3) When prompted to reboot your PC, select the “Restart now” button or wait for Windows to automatically
restart.
4) After Windows restarts, follow any onscreen instructions then sign-in to Windows 8.1.

Part IV: Update Windows 8.1 by using Windows Update

1) In the Settings charm, click Change PC settings.
2) Under PC settings, select Update and Recovery.
3) Select Windows Update, and then select Check now.
4) Select View Details.
5) Place a check mark in both Important and Optional updates then select Install.
6) Follow the on screen instructions to check for and install any updates.
(!) Several reboots may be required in order to complete the whole updating process.

Part V: Check Toshiba Service Station for updates & or obtain software from TOSHIBA web site

1) On Start screen, type Service Station, and then click Service Station from the list that appears.
2) Click Check for Updates and install any updates that appear.
3) Visit the TOSHIBA support web site http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/download

Part VI: Check the Windows Store for updates

1) Open the Windows Store by tapping or clicking the Store tile on the Start screen.
2) Check for updates and install any updates available.

Appendix A: Restoring the pre-installed software

If you would like to restore your computer back to factory preloaded software, you may choose either option below to proceed.
(!) Make sure that the AC adaptor is connected during whole restoring process.
(!) When you reinstall the Windows operating system, the hard disk may be reformatted and all data may be lost, so it is recommended to backup all your files and settings before restoring.
Do not back up files to the same hard disk that Windows is installed on. For example, do not back up files to a recovery partition. You can back up to another drive or DVD.

Option I:

1) In the Settings charm, click Change PC settings.
2) Click Update & recovery under PC settings.
3) Click Recovery tab.
4) Click Get started under Remove everything and reinstall Windows
5) Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the recovery.

Option II:

1) Insert the recovery media (DVD or USB flash memory) which was made by TOSHIBA Recovery Media
Creator before updating to Windows 8.1.
2) In the Settings charm, click Power and then select Restart.
3) Hold down F12 key and then release this key one second after the computer is power on.
4) Use up and down cursor keys to select the recovery media device, then press the ENTER key.
5) Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the recovery.

Appendix B: How to check for optional updates in Windows 8

In order to prepare your computer before updating to Windows 8.1, please check for and install optional updates.

NOTE: This procedure should be used after you have installed all Windows 8 Important Updates.

1) After checking for and installing any important updates go back into Windows Update and select Check
for updates now.
2) Select No more important updates are available.
3) Select Get more info.
4) Select and install all optional updates.
